Details
Oak & Sapling Foundations was created for families who want a beautiful, wholesome beginning to phonics and reading.
Shaped by stories, poetry, picture books, nature, and the steady, faithful work of learning to read, this 26-week kindergarten reading readiness series guides children from early sound awareness to letter knowledge, blending, and pre-reading confidence through short daily lessons designed for home.
Foundations begins where reading truly begins: with listening, language, rhyme, rhythm, sounds, and the joyful noticing of words. Over the course of five books, children move from hearing sounds in the world around them to building the letter-sound knowledge and early word skills that prepare them for beginning readers.
Foundations was meant to be read, talked through, and enjoyed together as a rich and literary beginning to reading for the early kindergarten years.
**Is Foundations the right fit for my child?**
Foundations is a good fit for the child who does not yet have mastery over letter sounds but is ready for a gentle, structured program to transition them to early reading.

The Foundations Path
Book 1 — Little Ears, Ready to Hear
A rich beginning to reading starts with listening. In Book 1, children learn to notice and delight in the sounds around them through rhyme, rhythm, environmental sounds, syllables, and playful sound awareness activities.
Children practice:
listening carefully to sounds
hearing rhyme and rhythm
noticing beginning and ending sounds
clapping syllables
building phonological awareness through conversation and play
Book 2 — Sounds Take Shape
In Book 2, children begin learning that the sounds they hear can be represented by letters. Through short daily lessons, they are introduced to early letter-sound relationships while continuing to strengthen listening skills and sound awareness.
Children practice:
connecting sounds to letters
recognizing early letter sounds
listening for sounds in spoken words
strengthening sound-symbol awareness
building confidence with the alphabet
Book 3 — Letters Take Root
Book 3 continues the journey through alphabet knowledge and sound awareness, helping children grow more secure in their letter-sound relationships while deepening the listening and word-awareness skills that support later reading.
Children practice:
alphabet mastery
beginning sound identification
letter-sound review
sound discrimination
pre-reading confidence through meaningful repetition and review
Book 4 — Building Little Words
In Book 4, children begin playing with sounds in new ways—blending them orally, changing them, and learning to hear how little sounds come together to form words. This book builds the bridge between alphabet knowledge and early word work.
Children practice:
oral blending
sound manipulation
word play
hearing and changing sounds in simple words
building the foundations for future decoding
Book 5 — Ready to Read
Book 5 gathers together all the earlier work and gently leads children toward the threshold of reading. Through middle sounds, word families, print awareness, and tiny word work, children continue building the confidence and readiness needed for beginning readers.
Children practice:
hearing middle sounds in words
noticing word families and rhyming patterns
changing sounds to make new words
understanding how books and print work
building early reading readiness
